The South African Boerboel Mastiff or simply the South African Boerboel is a large, strong, and intelligent dog. It has a buoyant movement and a well-developed muscle. The head of the South African Boerboel is short, square, muscular and with well-filled eyes and cheeks. The top of its head is broad and flat.

The Boerboel originates

The Boerboel originates from South Africa. The word “Boer” which when translated, means “farmer”. This breed, therefore, is commonly referred to as the farmer’s dog in South Africa.

This dog was originally bred for guarding a home. It came from a mastiff family. It possesses good territorial instincts. However, when not tamed can be dangerous, reckless, and destructive. It’s important to remember that this breed needs to be trained and needs human companionship.

The South African Boerboel Mastiff is a reliable, intelligent, and obedient breed. It is an ideal guard dog because of its self-assured and fearless nature. Even though they possess an intimidating appearance, the South African Boerboel is playful and affectionate to their owners and is partial to playing with their master. They are excellent with children… adoring every bit of attention they get.

It’s best for this breed to have a dominant master. As the owner, you should project a strong authority type presence over the dog as this type of breed can have a bit of a stubborn nature. Letting the dog know who’s in charge is very a significant characteristic for you to possess around them.

This breed

This breed would obviously not be recommended for people who live in apartments. These dogs need a large fenced yard to run out and play to get a lot of exercises. They love the outdoors, but would not work for them (or you) to allow them to be freely roaming around the neighborhood as their nature is one to be very protective and territorial, and as such don’t necessarily do well with strangers.

When it comes to appearance and grooming, the coat of this dog is relatively short, coarse, and dense. They require less grooming or bathing on a regular basis. The average life span of this dog ranges between 12 to 15 years if they are well taken care of.

Generally, the South African Boerboel Mastiff is a great pet to have around the house and a reliable guard dog. They are loyal and loving and well worth the time it takes to train and domesticate.
